What Does the MAZDA Logo Mean?

October 9th, 2023 by

When shopping for a car at El Dorado Mazda, one of the most prominent things you will see is the Mazda logo on our signage and above the grille of our vehicles. A car maker’s logo not only distinguishes it from its competitors, but hints at that company’s core values. Learning the design choices behind the Mazda logo will help you understand what we believe in.

What Does the MAZDA Logo Look Like?

The Mazda logo has two parts: the emblem and wordmark. Furthermore, the emblem has two sections.

Its bottom section is an upright oval, which gradually narrows toward the top. The upper section is an open, curved, V-like shape, set above the oval. Underneath the emblem, is the Mazda wordmark, or company name written in a stylized way.

Logo Colors and Symbolism

Typically, in modern advertising materials, we use silver in the emblem’s foreground, gray in its background, and blue in the wordmark. You may also see the wordmark written partially or entirely in silver. Silver and gray provide depth and texture, while blue invokes innovation and modernity.

Logo Origins and Evolution

Mazda derives its name from Jujiro Matsuda, the company founder. In operation since 1920, Mazda initially created machinery used in manufacturing. Its logo changed over time, to reflect customers’ priorities and prevailing graphic design trends.

Though Mazda added an emblem to the logo in 1951, it did not have an oval shape, let alone the current colorization, until 1991. The accompanying wordmark had existed for decades beforehand, but it did not reach its current appearance until 1997.

Besides the aforementioned occasional color changes, the wordmark has not undergone significant revisions since that time.
