The History of the MAZDA Miata

The Mazda Miata is one of the most unique roadsters to ever touch rubber to the road. Now, with nearly 35 years of history, it’s time to look back at this iconic sports car. Here’s how the Mazda Miata has evolved into the sporty model it is today.
NA Generation
The first Mazda MX-5 Miata to roll off the production floor was the 1990 model, which hit dealerships in 1989. This first generation, labeled NA by Mazda, first featured a 1.6-liter engine. In 1993, this was changed for the larger 1.8-liter engine.
NB Generation
Following a successful generation that lasted nearly a decade, Mazda revamped the Miata model in 1998. These tweaks included permanent headlamps replacing the retractable ones and a more powerful engine. This also added a six-speed manual transmission to the mix of options.
NC Generation
The third Mazda Miata generation was called NC. It introduced the Power Retractable Hard Top, or PRHT. This is the forefather of today’s Mazda MX-5 Miata RF model.
ND Generation
The current generation first sold in 2015. In 2019, the company did make a tweak adding a more powerful 181-horsepower engine. This is still one of the most popular cars for drivers of all types. It comes in two variants: the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF, again with that hard-top retractable roof.
