The History and Meaning of the MAZDA Logo

When you shop at El Dorado Mazda, you’ll notice that all the new Mazda vehicles in our showroom proudly bear the Mazda logo. The Mazda brand launched as a cork manufacturer in 1920, and the company began producing vehicles in 1931. Ever since, the Mazda logo has been a source of pride and deep meaning for the automaker and its employees — let’s explore its history.
Early 1930s – 1954
Like we tell the story of our McKinney, TX Mazda dealership on our website, the Mazda team tells their story on the carmaker’s website. From the early 1930s through 1954, the Mazda logo was a curvaceous expression of the company’s name, and it looked like the letters were drawn in sweeping cursive even though the letters stood separately.
1936 – 1959
A logo consisting of three horizontal lines that seem to bend to form an “M” in the middle of each line was another Mazda logo. This particular logo represented the flow of a river in Hiroshima, Japan. The three M’s stood for “Mazda Motor Manufacturer,” and the long side extensions alongside the M’s represented agility and the ability to soar to new heights of success and innovation.
1954 – 1974
As the Mazda team started to export Mazda vehicles to other countries, they created a new logo that would be well-received in overseas lands. The company adjusted its logo so the Mazda name was more easily recognizable, with all the letters in the logo in uppercase.
1959 – 1997
From 1959 – 1974, a logo consisting of a white, lowercase M with extended side lines encapsulated in a black circle appeared on Mazda passenger cars. The Mazda team introduced a timeless Mazda logo in 1997, with all letters in the Mazda name in lowercase except for the D. This graphic expresses precision and reliability, and it enabled the typeface to fit into a rectangle perfectly.
1997 – Present
As you look through the pre-owned Mazda models our dealership, you might see older versions of the current Mazda logo. While the Mazda name is still displayed as it was just described, the carmaker’s logo now includes V-shaped, M-like wings inside a silver circle.
According to the Mazda team, that symbol expresses the company’s commitment to “pursue ongoing improvements to drive powerful, continuous growth.” The wings acknowledge the Mazda team’s creativity, flexible thinking, vitality, and resilience.
